President William Ruto has ordered the rapid rehabilitation and beautification of Mombasa Road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to ABC Westlands over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
The directive comes after adjustments to the highway were made to accommodate the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.
The Kenya National Highways Authority is overseeing the works, which aim to repair sections that were altered during the expressway project and improve the general condition of the highway. Routine maintenance on the original Mombasa Road began in April 2023 and has continued following the completion of the expressway.
Specific contracts for the rehabilitation have been awarded to M/S Wolf Paving Works Kenya Limited, responsible for the Ole Sereni to Athi River stretch, and M/S Shovels N Trowels Limited, handling the James Gichuru Road junction to Ole Sereni section. The projects include recarpeting, excavation, and drainage system upgrades designed to enhance road safety and durability.
KeNHA is currently installing footbridge beams along the highway, near the Panari Hotel. Drivers have been advised to plan alternative routes to avoid delays at night.
The government has indicated that the Mombasa Road rehabilitation forms part of a wider programme to expand and upgrade key arterial routes in Nairobi, including Ngong Road and Magadi Road.
The improvements are intended to reduce congestion, enhance traffic flow, and create a safer commuting experience for motorists during the peak festive season.
The rehabilitation and beautification works are expected to be completed in time for the New Year period, providing smoother access between the airport and the city centre and improving the overall aesthetics of one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.
The government has urged the public to exercise caution and patience while works continue.
