LSK President Criticizes DPP Over Handling of Police Brutality Cases

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has criticized Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga for his recent directives regarding cases against police officers.

Speaking on Friday, Odhiambo expressed disappointment with the DPP’s approach, suggesting that he could do more than merely issue directives for further investigations.

Odhiambo pointed out that the DPP should have directly instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the actions of some officers during recent protests.

She also emphasized the importance of witness protection, noting that fear is preventing some witnesses and families from speaking out against the police.

“I was quite disappointed by the statement by the DPP because he should be giving statements instead of throwing his hand in the air and saying that there is nothing that he can do,” Odhiambo stated.

“He is an independent constitutional office and he cannot come and tell the people that he is helpless.”

The LSK has offered to accompany witnesses who may have evidence of police brutality during the protests and proposed setting up neutral locations for these individuals to report their experiences safely.

In response to four files submitted by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the DPP directed additional investigations and documentation.

For instance, in the case of Rex Masai’s death, the DPP requested witnesses to come forward as CCTV footage did not identify the officer who fired the shot. IPOA has also complained about police non-cooperation during investigations.

Odhiambo called on President William Ruto to establish a fund to support families affected during the protests. Earlier, Ruto had promised financial support to these families and urged the release of arrested protesters.
