Luigi Mangione arrives at court for hearings over US healthcare executive’s killing

Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is set to return to court on Monday, Dec. 1, as his attorneys seek to get key pieces of evidence thrown out of his New York state murder case.

Mangione was arrested nearly a year ago at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after authorities say he fatally shot Thompson outside a hotel in Midtown, Manhattan, on Dec. 4, 2024.

The Dec. 1 hearing centers around evidence police recovered in Mangione’s backpack at the time of his arrest, including a notebook and a handgun that prosecutors argue connect Mangione to the killing.

Karen Friedman-Agnifilo, one of Mangione’s attorneys, argued in court filings that police did not read Mangione his Miranda rights before questioning him and searched his backpack before obtaining a warrant. Officials have maintained that the search was lawful.

In his New York state case, Mangione faces second-degree murder charge, which carries a possible 25 years to life in prison if he’s convicted. In September, the judge overseeing the state case, Gregory Carro, dismissed terrorism-related charges, stating that the evidence was insufficient.
