Kenya’s Hollywood star, Lupita Nyong’o, has publicly condemned President William Ruto’s administration for its response to the anti-government protests that erupted between June and August 2024.
The protests, triggered by opposition to the Finance Bill 2024 and rising costs of living, resulted in 42 deaths, 132 missing persons, and over 1,200 arrests, according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
In a candid interview with the BBC, Nyong’o likened the current political climate to the oppressive era of former President Daniel Arap Moi, recalling the personal trauma her family endured during Moi’s regime.
Her father, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, was imprisoned and tortured under Moi’s rule, leaving deep scars on their family.
Lupita voiced concern over the government’s repressive tactics, stating, “It is chilling to know that this government is resorting to tactics I thought were left behind.”
Her remarks have resonated with many Kenyans, particularly the younger generation protesting for a different future.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura dismissed the comparison to Moi’s era, defending the administration’s actions as necessary to maintain public order.
However, Nyong’o’s powerful words have ignited further debate about Kenya’s political direction and the handling of dissent.
