An M-Pesa agent was brutally stabbed to death on Friday evening in a suspected robbery incident at her shop in Shauri Moyo estate, Kisumu Central sub-county.
The victim, identified as Mercy Muthoni, was attacked by a lone assailant who gained access to her shop through the back door. The attacker, armed with a kitchen knife, stabbed Muthoni in the neck before attempting to escape.
According to a police report, the suspect, 29-year-old Justin Otieno, was intercepted by angry members of the public as he tried to flee. He was lynched at the scene and died instantly.
Muthoni was rushed to Star Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police officers from Kondele police station visited the scene and recovered the murder weapon along with several documents belonging to the deceased suspect, including his national ID card, KRA PIN, school and baptism certificates, birth certificate, and a school leaving certificate.
Both bodies were taken to the Star Hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital morgues pending autopsy and further investigations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into the incident as police continue to urge the public to avoid mob justice and allow the law to take its course.
