The M-Pesa Foundation has launched a major infrastructure development project worth KES 115 million aimed at transforming education and access to essential services in Lamu County. The initiative, part of the Foundation’s Citizens of the Future program, targets Maisha Masha Primary School in Witu and Mtangawanda Primary School in Faza, with the goal of improving learning conditions and long-term community resilience.
At Maisha Masha Primary School in Lamu West Sub-County, the Foundation will invest KES 70 million to construct 12 new classrooms, ensuring space for all learners, including those in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE). The project will also include a fully equipped kitchen, a science laboratory, and a 40-seater ICT laboratory, providing students with critical exposure to digital skills.
To address water scarcity and improve hygiene, the Foundation will also drill a borehole and install a community-accessible water kiosk.
“M-Pesa Foundation invests heavily in education because we recognize it as a powerful tool for societal development,” said Patricia Ithau, M-Pesa Foundation Trustee. “Through our Citizens of the Futureinitiative, we’re equipping young learners with the tools they need to succeed.”
In Mtangawanda Primary School, located in Faza, Lamu East Sub-County, the Foundation will invest KES 45 million to build new Grade 1–9 classrooms, an ECDE block, an administration block, and an ICT lab. A boreholewill also be drilled to ensure access to clean water for the school and surrounding community.
“We are grateful for this partnership, especially for the Foundation’s continued role in improving both health and education outcomes in Lamu,” said Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy. “These new facilities will create safer, more conducive learning environments and help secure a better future for our children.”
This project builds on similar initiatives M-Pesa Foundation has rolled out across Kenya, including in Homa Bay, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bungoma, Baringo, Bomet, Siaya, Migori, and Vihiga counties.
The Foundation’s focus on holistic development — combining education, health, and water access — continues to make a profound impact in underserved communities, bridging gaps and empowering future generations.
