The East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) has declared that the M23 rebels will remove its men from Rumagambo, in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
This follows their successful exit from Kibumba last week.
According to EACRF Commander Major General Jeff Nyagah, the rebel group’s retreat would be orderly and controlled, and the EACRF will take over the deserted positions.
Major General Nyagah, the Ad hoc Verification Mechanism, and the Extended Joint Verification Mechanism met in Kibumba on Saturday.
Kibumba has now been seized by EACRF forces in accordance with the November 23, 2022 Luanda statement.
The relocation allowed for the return of displaced people and the establishment of humanitarian aid delivery channels.
Major General Nyagah has urged all parties involved in the violence in Eastern DRC to quickly implement the cease-fire demand described in the Luanda statement and to stop attacks on civilians, who he says continue to suffer the brunt of the conflict.
He also stated that an impartial investigation into the deaths in Kishishe earlier this month, which were described as a revenge killing between the M23 and rival armed groups, will hold those responsible accountable.
