M23 Sounds Alarm Over Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC

Written by Lisa Murimi

The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) has raised concerns over escalating violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), accusing government forces (FARDC) and their allies of committing atrocities against civilians.

In a statement on Monday, the group warned of possible intervention if the violence persists.

“These crimes must stop immediately; otherwise, we will have no choice but to intervene to protect the Congolese population,” M23 declared.

The ongoing conflict has left civilians trapped in a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that at least 843 people have been killed and over 3,000 injured since January 26, 2025.

Medical facilities are overwhelmed, with health workers fleeing and critical supplies dwindling.

Regional leaders from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have called for a ministerial meeting to address the crisis within 30 days.

M23 also rejected accusations of forcing displaced civilians to return home, claiming they only return when safety is assured.

As disease spreads amid the chaos, WHO reported 600 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths in North Kivu.

“The sight of uncared-for bodies is distressing,” WHO warned, calling for urgent humanitarian support.
