The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) will broadcast a one-hour debate between five candidates running for Machakos Governor on August 9th, 2022.
Nzioka Waita of Chama Cha Uzalendo, Johnson Muthama of the United Democratic Alliance(UDA), Wavinya Ndeti of the Wiper Democratic Movement, Francis Maliti of Maendeleo Chap Chap, and Rose Mulwa of the Empowerment & Liberation Party are among the five candidates to take the stage.
The debate, which will begin at 9.50 p.m. is scheduled to be aired from Scott Christian University.
The candidates will engage an audience of professionals and leaders drawn from Business, Women, and Youth groups, as well as those watching from home.
The debate takes place at a time when pollsters have suggested a three-horse race between Ndeti, Muthama, and Waita.
Machakos, unlike the other two counties in the Ukambani region, appears interesting and unpredictable, with the electorate previously unable to support Wiper, the region’s dominant political party.
The entrant of Nzioka Waita, who has made inroads within the county, further complicated the difficult race.
Wavinya Ndeti is aiming for the top seat amid falling twice to Dr. Alfred Mutua, the outgoing governor.
Johnstone Muthama, currently running the viral UDA party is a former senator in the county, while Deputy Governor Maliti will be seeking to take over from his boss.
Machakos will be the first of many gubernatorial debates to be televised by the national broadcaster.
