Machakos Speaker Fights Court-Backed Return of Suspended MCAs as Political Tensions Rise

A political storm is brewing in Machakos County as Speaker Anne Kiusya heads back to the High Court to challenge a ruling that reinstated nine suspended Members of County Assembly (MCAs). The lawmakers were initially barred from the assembly for 28 sittings over alleged misconduct and procedural violations.

Speaker Kiusya argues the court erred in lifting the suspensions without hearing her side. Represented by lawyer Danstan Omari, she claims the MCAs failed to disclose critical facts in their petition and is now asking the court to revoke the orders, insisting the suspensions should stand.

The suspended MCAs include key county leaders: Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka, Deputy Speaker Stephen Nzue Mwanthi, former Minority Leader Judas Mbili Ndawa, and MCAs Felix Mutunga Ngui, Raphael Nzau, Charles Mbuva, Phoebe Koki, Anna Nthenya Ndilo, and Catherine Kyee.

Beyond the legal battle, the saga has ignited fierce political tensions. Kinanie/Mathatani MCA Francis Kavyu accused Governor Wavinya Ndeti of making inflammatory remarks, alleging she threatened to rally locals to oust Speaker Kiusya. Kavyu cautioned that such actions could incite unrest and warned against undermining the rule of law.

Speaker Kiusya’s lawyer echoed the warning, calling on the Governor to respect constitutional procedures. “If she wants the Speaker out, let her initiate an impeachment process. Leadership should not be run through threats or shortcuts,” Omari said.

With the legal contest ongoing and political pressure mounting, the standoff is shaping up to be a major test for the county’s leadership. Residents now watch closely as the courts deliberate, waiting to see how the power struggle will reshape the future of governance in Machakos.
