Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush Region

A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Tuesday, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.

According to GFZ, the quake occurred at a depth of 186 kilometres (116 miles), an area known for frequent seismic activity due to its complex tectonic setting.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. However, the Hindu Kush region’s deep-focus quakes are often felt across a wide area, including parts of Pakistan, India, and Central Asia.

Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountains, where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates collide. Shallow quakes in the region have previously caused significant destruction, though deeper ones like Tuesday’s typically result in less surface damage.
