Harry Maguire rose to the occasion on Wednesday night, heading home a crucial winner to hand 10-man Manchester United a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
It was their first Premier League win since January, a much-needed boost for Ruben Amorim’s struggling side.
The match began disastrously for United as a defensive blunder allowed Jaden Philogene to score within the first four minutes. A mix-up at the back saw Patrick Dorgu misplace a pass beyond Andre Onana, leaving Philogene with an open goal to tap in.
However, United responded swiftly, turning the tide with two goals in quick succession. Sam Morsy inadvertently put the ball into his own net, leveling the score, before Matthijs de Ligt smashed home a rebound following a double save by Ipswich’s Alex Palmer.
Ipswich were dealt a further blow when Dorgu was shown a red card in the 43rd minute after a VAR review for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson. Despite being a man down, Philogene struck again with a curling cross that evaded Onana, restoring parity at 2-2.
With United desperately seeking a breakthrough, Maguire delivered the decisive moment. Rising high from a corner, he powered a header past Palmer to seal a crucial three points for United.
The victory lifted United to 14th place with 33 points, while Ipswich remain third-bottom, still searching for their first league win of 2025.
The Red Devils had not won a Premier League match at home since mid-January, but they found resilience after an early setback. Their latest triumph marks their 110th comeback victory after conceding first—more than any other side in Premier League history.
Bruno Fernandes, who played a key role in the comeback against Everton last weekend, continued to showcase his influence. Since his debut in February 2020, only Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne have registered more assists in the league than Fernandes, who now has 48.
Despite the victory, United’s defensive fragility remains a concern. This was the 12th time since Amorim took charge on November 24 that they have conceded first—a worrying statistic they must address moving forward.
For now, though, Amorim and his squad will savor a much-needed win as they look to build momentum in the final stretch of the season.
