South Africa’s U20 national team, Amajita, clinched a dramatic 1-0 extra-time win over DR Congo to secure their place in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025 — and with it, a coveted spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
After a tightly contested 90 minutes that ended goalless, the match came alive in extra time. Thabang Mahlangu emerged the hero in the 109th minute, tapping in from close range after an inch-perfect assist from Shakeel April.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the South African bench and fans, marking a significant milestone for the rising stars.
The regulation time was a cagey affair, with both sides creating chances but lacking the finishing touch. DR Congo’s Jules Ahoka and Samuel Ntanda were persistent threats in the air, while South Africa’s Patrick Autata and Neo Rapoo tested the opposition but couldn’t find a way through.
The match grew increasingly physical in the second half, with bookings handed out to South Africa’s Kekana and Rapoo, and DR Congo’s Mukanadila and Tshilanda.
Substitutions were key in shifting momentum, with Mahlangu’s impact proving to be the difference. DR Congo pressed late, with Ngoyala and Lufuiku missing crucial chances, but Amajita’s defence — marshalled by keeper Tylon Smith — held firm.
South Africa now joins Morocco, Nigeria, and hosts Egypt in the semi-finals, eyeing continental glory and further success on the global stage.
