Maize Flour Prices Rise To Historic Levels

Written By Gerald Gekara | |

The cost of maize flour has increased at major retail stores, exacerbating the misery of consumers already dealing with rising costs of other essential necessities.

After a two-kilogramme packet of flour touched a high of Sh124 from a low of Sh108 last month, the cost of the staple on the shelves is progressively climbing to levels last seen in April 2020.

Popular brands like Pembe and Soko are currently selling for Sh124 per two-kilo package at major retail shops, while Jogoo is selling for Sh122 per two-kilo packet.

The costs in estate shops, on the other hand, can reach Sh130.

Farmers are hoarding their output in expectation of an increase in the cost of maize in the coming days.

Millers warned of an expected spike in the price of flour due to low maize stockpiles in the market.

The millers predicted that the price of a two-kilogramme packet of flour would approach Sh130.

Maize prices have been slowly climbing since December, reaching a high of Sh3,500 for a 90-kg bag delivered to millers in Nairobi, up from a low of Sh2,300 in early December, putting downward pressure on flour prices.

Due to a shortfall, the National Cereals and Produce Board was compelled to raise the price of maize by Sh300 last month to entice farmers.
