Motorists in Nairobi should brace for significant traffic disruptions this weekend as key roads will be closed to accommodate the Nairobi City Marathon set for Sunday, July 6.
The closures will begin on Saturday, July 5 at 10:00pm and continue through various times on Sunday, July 6, impacting major routes in and around the city. Authorities have urged road users to plan alternative routes and expect delays.
Among the most affected is the Nairobi Expressway, which will be completely closed in both directions from James Gichuru to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) starting 10:00pm Saturday to 3:00pm Sunday.
Other roads to be affected on Sunday include:
- Waiyaki Way (inner lanes): Closed from 12:00am to 10:00am between Musa Gitau Road and the Expressway entrance.
- Mombasa Road & Southern Bypass (Likoni Road crossing): Shut from 12:00am to 11:00am, affecting major roundabouts and all city entry and exit points.
- Uhuru Highway: Closed in two sections — Southern Bypass to Langata Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout to Kenyatta Avenue — from 12:00am to 2:00pm.
- Kenyatta Avenue: Closed between PanAfric Hotel and Uhuru Highway from 12:00am to 4:00pm.

Traffic marshals, city authorities, and police officers will be deployed to guide motorists and ease rerouting. Event organizers have encouraged early planning to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure public safety during the marathon.
