Makueni County Referral Hospital has successfully conducted its first-ever brain tumor surgery, significantly boosting the county’s capacity to offer advanced healthcare services locally.
The complex procedure, which lasted over six hours, was led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Muthoka Mativo, with assistance from Dr. Angela Murunga.
The surgical team performed the delicate excision of a tumor on a 69-year-old male patient who had been experiencing persistent migraines and seizures.
After a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, the medical team advised immediate surgical intervention—a procedure that was successfully carried out in the hospital’s main theatre.

Dr. Harvey Mulei, the County’s Chief Officer for Health, was present during the surgery and commended the entire medical team for their precision, coordination, and commitment.
He hailed the procedure as a major leap in decentralising specialised healthcare services, saying that Makueni residents no longer need to travel to far-off facilities like Kenyatta National Hospital for such critical surgeries.
“This is a proud moment for our county and a testament to our ongoing investment in healthcare infrastructure and personnel,” said Dr. Mulei.
The patient is currently recovering well under close medical supervision.
This landmark success places Makueni County at the forefront of counties now offering neurosurgical services at the referral level, aligning with Kenya’s broader vision of equitable and accessible healthcare.
