Makueni Inches Closer to Finalizing County Energy Policy

Makueni County is on the verge of enacting its first-ever County Energy Policy, a milestone that promises to transform the region’s energy landscape through clean, affordable, and sustainable solutions.

Spearheaded by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Public Works, Housing and Energy, the policy has been developed in collaboration with Strathmore University, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and UK-PACT, under a shared vision to integrate energy access with socio-economic development.

On Thursday, 8th May 2025, the draft policy underwent a key validation exercise led by Energy Chief Officer Eng. Naomi Nthambi, with participation from all County Directors.

The session was aimed at aligning the policy with Makueni’s broader development objectives and ensuring it meets both current and future energy needs.

“This policy sets the stage for inclusive growth by promoting renewable energy, reducing reliance on biomass, and empowering local communities,” said Eng. Nthambi.

Environment Chief Officer Dr. Geoffrey Muthoka, who was also present, emphasized the importance of integrating environmental safeguards within energy planning, noting that the policy would support climate-resilient infrastructure and reduce emissions.

The draft will now proceed through a structured review process involving Chief Officers, the County Executive Committee, the County Assembly, and community stakeholders.

Once finalized, it will provide a legal and strategic framework to guide energy investments and partnerships across Makueni.

The initiative marks a critical step in advancing Universal Energy Access and will position Makueni as a leader in county-level clean energy planning in Kenya.
