Malkia Strikers Cry Out Over Unpaid Allowances as They Head Into World Championships

Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, have appealed for urgent support over unpaid allowances, just as they prepare to face Germany in their opening match at the World Championships in Thailand.

In a video circulating online, the players expressed frustration that despite promises from Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, their allowances due weeks ago remain unpaid. They recounted meeting the CS, who assured them the money would be released “tomorrow,” but to date, no funds have been disbursed.

The athletes, who have consistently brought glory to Kenya in continental and global competitions, said the delay has left them distressed, worrying about how their families back home will manage rent, school fees, and food.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who shared the players’ video on social media, criticized the government for what he termed “PR without delivery.” He recalled that CS Mvurya told Parliament he had secured Ksh70 million to pay allowances for all national teams including the Malkia Strikers yet the payments are still pending.

The Malkia Strikers also revealed that funds provided to their federation by a betting partner have been partly spent on kits and logistics, but not their allowances.

Their appeal has fueled fresh debate on accountability and funding in Kenyan sports, with growing calls for the government to prioritize athlete welfare. The team plays Germany tomorrow amid uncertainty over whether the promised payments will ever reach them.
