A man was arrested on Sunday afternoon after he scaled a gate at the U.S. Treasury Department building in the heart of Washington, D.C., prompting a brief lockdown and investigation by federal and local authorities.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Secret Service, the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the suspect climbed the perimeter gate of the Treasury building, which is located adjacent to the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.
In response to the breach, the Metropolitan Police Department’s bomb squad was deployed to examine a bag the man had left on the sidewalk outside the fence. While the bag raised initial concerns, the Secret Service later confirmed that it did not contain an explosive device.
“Out of an abundance of caution, traffic in the area was temporarily blocked off as the bag was investigated,” said a Secret Service spokesperson. “No Secret Service protectees were present at the White House at the time of the incident.”
The man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was immediately taken into custody by Secret Service officers. He was charged with unlawful entry and also found to have an outstanding warrant. Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, as per agency protocol.
Officials have not released details regarding the motive behind the suspect’s actions, and investigations are ongoing.
The Treasury Department building, a National Historic Landmark, houses the offices of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and other key financial personnel. Given its proximity to the White House, the area is one of the most heavily guarded in the nation’s capital.
Authorities have since cleared the area, and normal traffic flow has resumed. The Secret Service said it will continue working closely with local law enforcement agencies to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
