Manchester City have included injured midfielder Rodri in their updated Champions League squad for the knockout phase, while also incorporating new signings Omar Marmoush, Nico González, and Abdukodir Khusanov.
The announcement comes ahead of their much-anticipated playoff tie against La Liga giants Real Madrid.
Rodri, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury that he sustained in September, will miss both legs of the tie. However, his presence in the squad suggests the club is hopeful for his eventual return later in the season. The Spaniard has expressed his desire to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which is set to take place in June in the U.S.
City’s famous head coach Pep Guardiola has urged caution regarding Rodri’s recovery, advising the 28-year-old to take his time and avoid rushing back to full fitness. “Rodri is crucial for us, but we must ensure he returns in optimal condition,” Guardiola stated.
The Citizens will kick off the knockout stage with the first leg against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, February 13, with the return leg scheduled for February 19 at the Bernabéu. Having finished 22nd in the league phase standings, City are eager to make a statement in this pivotal clash.
In accordance with UEFA regulations, Manchester City was allowed to make three amendments to their squad ahead of the knockout rounds. With the additions of Marmoush, González, and Khusanov, the club chose to omit Vitor Reis, who recently joined from Palmeiras in a €35 million ($36.2m) transfer but has yet to make his debut. Reis was a bench option for both the recent victories over Chelsea (3-1) and the defeat to Arsenal (5-1).
As City prepares for their showdown with Real Madrid, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see how the new signings integrate into the squad, and if Rodri’s potential return can bolster the team’s chances in the Champions League.
