A Nairobi Court has allowed police to detain a university graduate from Kericho accused of diverting money from the ministry of Education to his personal account and distributing the said money leaving nothing for the sleuths to recover.
Giddion Kibett Langat is said to have diverted Ksh 1,173,352 made to facilitate capitation in a primary school from the Ministry of Education to his account and then fraudulently transferred the money to the accounts of his accomplices.
Kibet is believed to have diverted the said funds from the Ministry of Education on January 22, 2025.
The funds were meant for Menet Primary School in Bomet County.
After successfully diverting the money, the suspect allegedly flew to Kericho Township where he was arrested and transferred to Nairobi.
Preliminary investigations have so far established that the scheme was well planned fraud involving many suspects who are yet to be arrested.
The prosecution pleaded with the court to allow their application to detain the suspect for 10 more days to conclude their investigations.
In opposing the application, the application, the defence told court that Kibett has a fixed place of abode where the police can always trace him and that he is fresh graduate who is just hunting for a living.
The court allowed the 10 days detention application saying matters touching money made for education capitation should be handled with care.
The suspect will be detained at Kileleshwa Police Station for 10 days.
