Benson Lekandie was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in jail today by Kabarnet Law Courts Chief Magistrate Hon. Judith Wanjala for defilement in violation of law.
Lekandie found himself on the wrong side of the law after he chose to marry a 14-year-old girl prompting a public outcry at Kabarnet with residents calling for the protection of girl child.
The prosecution led by Joseck Abwajo informed the court that the accused had impregnated a 14-year-old girl, and the girl had moved in with the accused when the guardian reported the matter to the police, resulting in the Lekandie’s arrest.
Hon. Wanjala ruled that a court is the last hope for the child and that Justice should not only be served but also seen to have been served.
The court ruled that the purpose of sentence should be to retribute and serve a deterrence effect to the offender and other potential offenders.
