Man Killed In A Brawl With Police At Chang’aa Den

After the brewer was apprehended, the man, identified as Aloice Owino Ooko, 40, was said to have charged officers with a panga. The law prohibits the brewing or sale of chang'aa.

A man was shot dead by police in Urefu, Ugunja sub-county, Siaya County, during a brawl with officers who had arrested an illegal brew dealer.


After the brewer was apprehended, the man, identified as Aloice Owino Ooko, 40, was said to have charged officers with a panga.
The law prohibits the brewing or sale of chang’aa.


According to a police report, “At around [4pm] at Urefu within Ugunja sub-county, officers from Ugunja Police Station had proceeded on a raid when one male adult identified as Aloice Owino Ooko aged about 40 years advanced at police officers who had raided a home of one illicit brew dealer identified as Nyamalo.”


According to the report, the man tried to eject the officers from the area.

After the dealer was apprehended, the dead, who is also a neighbor, sprinted to his house, emerged brandishing a panga, advanced toward Police Constable Douglas Wangila, who had gone to apprehend the dealer, with the aim to slash the officer, and chased him down the road.

The duty officer requested reinforcement, according to the report.


In an attempt to scare the man away, the officer fired two shots into the air, but Mr. Ooko reportedly moved closer to the officer.

The deceased aggressively moved closer to the officer after the officer fired two warning bullets in the air.

The report states that during the disturbance, the officer fired a self-defense shot at the deceased’s neck from the right while exiting from the left.


Mr. Ooko was subsequently taken by ambulance to Ambira Sub-County Hospital, where doctors there immediately declared him dead.
