Kibera, Nairobi – A man has been sentenced to death by a Kibera court after being found guilty of two separate counts of robbery with violence.

The convicted individual, Isaac Khanga, was sentenced by Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi following a successful prosecution by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Khanga was convicted of robbing two men of mobile phones and cash in the Kawangware Madiaba area of Dagoretti Sub-county, Nairobi, during the night of November 3, 2024.

According to court proceedings, Khanga, along with unidentified accomplices, committed the offenses around 11:00 p.m., threatening the victims with violence in both incidents.

In the first robbery, Khanga stole a Tecno mobile phone valued at Ksh. 24,000 and Ksh. 30,000 in cash.

In a separate attack on the same night, he robbed another victim of a phone worth Ksh. 15,000.

The court found that in both cases, the element of violence or the threat thereof was evident—meeting the threshold for a conviction under robbery with violence charges.

The prosecution, led by Counsel Ann Murage, presented compelling evidence and witnesses, securing a conviction beyond reasonable doubt.

The court also noted that Khanga carried out the robberies alongside accomplices who remain at large.

In her ruling, Magistrate Njagi reiterated that the death penalty remains a legal sentence under Kenyan law and has not been declared unconstitutional.

Khanga was handed two death sentences—one for each count—with one of the sentences to be held in abeyance.

Khanga had been formally charged on November 15, 2024, and the case was resolved within six months—a pace the ODPP hailed as a model of judicial efficiency.
