Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a man accused of fatally stabbing his friend following an argument over a KSh 50 debt in Mutitu Village, Kirinyaga Central Constituency.
According to witnesses, the two men, who were known to be close friends, got into a heated exchange after one allegedly demanded repayment of the small amount.
The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in the suspect grabbing a knife and stabbing his companion in the chest.
The man remains in custody as police investigate the incident.
Elsewhere, a mother in Bomet County was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly beating her two children, leading to the death of one. The 34-year-old woman, identified as Joan Chepkemoi Rono, reportedly attacked her nine-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son after accusing them of stealing bananas from a neighbour’s farm in Taboino village, Konoin.
According to police, the woman used a wooden rod to discipline the children, inflicting serious injuries on both. They were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where the young girl succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission.
Medical staff reported that she had visible swelling on her face and was bleeding from the mouth, while her brother sustained multiple wounds and remains under treatment.
“The matter is under active investigation. We urge residents to report similar incidents early to prevent such tragedies,” a police spokesperson stated.
Neighbours who knew the woman well have expressed shock, describing her as a calm and loving person. They claimed the incident was bizarre, as she had never before disciplined her children in that manner.
Local leaders have condemned the incident and urged parents to refrain from using violent disciplinary measures.
Human rights advocates have also come forward and advised parents and guardians on ways to discipline children, insisting on the need to end corporal punishment.
