Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League round of 16 by Atletico Madrid after edging to a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Renan Lodi scored the only goal just before half-time as Diego Simeone’s side won 2-1 on aggregate after a late draw in the first leg last month.
Following the home loss, United’s trophy drought will now almost certainly stretch to five years, with Ralf Rangnick’s side already eliminated from the FA Cup and 20 points behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.
Separately, Portugal’s Benfica also reserved their place in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Benfica’s Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez scored against Ajax in the 77th minute to secure a 1-0 win for the Lisbon club in Amsterdam.
In this way, Benfica won 3-2 on aggregate to reach the last eight in Europe’s top-tier club tournament.
Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid were confirmed for the quarterfinalists.
Two other clubs will join these six teams after Wednesday’s matches.
The quarterfinals draw will be held on March 18 in Nyon, Switzerland.
