A man has been found guilty of forging death certificates and burial permits for himself, and his entire family to defraud a SACCO.
Moses Okong’o Otwere appeared before Resident magistrate Caroline Muthoni at Milimani Law courts for Judgement.
According to court documents, on September 24, 2015 the accused person forged his own burial permit serial number 130278 dated September 15, 2015 indicating that he had passed on at Tabaka Mission Hospital.
Further, on September 22,2014, the accused person forged his own certificate of death entry number 550300862, and a certificate of death issued by the registrar of deaths at Gucha District.
He was also charged with forging his wife Milkah Bonareri Moses’ burial permit on April 6, 2015.
He also faced charges of forging his mother’s burial permit.
Also the accused person is said to have forged his father’s death certificate in the name of Meshack Kongo Otwere dated August 20, 2015.
He also forged another death certificate for Damaris Kwamboka dated December 18, 2016.
According to the prosecution, Moses Okong’o Otwere on October 30,2015, obtained Ksh 120,000 by pretending that he had passed-on on at Tabaka Mission hospital, and that the funds were to be used for the Burial Benevolent fund.
He is said to have used all the death certificates to obtain burial funds from the said SACCO pretending; his mother, father, wife, sister and himself had died.
After investigations, it was discovered that the accused person was still alive and that he was the exact person who presented himself to the SACCO with claims that he was dead.
It was also discovered that all his family members as indicated in the death certificates presented to the SACCO were indeed alive.
In mitigation, the accused person said that he was a family man and pleaded with the court to forgive him.
The court ordered his detention in custody until November 18, 2022 for sentencing.
