A 41-year-old man is being held by police in Kabumbu village, Kirinyaga County, for allegedly defiling and impregnating a 16-year-old mentally handicapped schoolgirl.
Harrison Mwangi Wanjohi, who had been on the run, was arrested on Monday in Karia village and is being interrogated at the Kerugoya Police Station.
Wanjohi is accused of defiling the pupil last year before going into hiding.
Kirinyaga Central police commander John Torori said that officers had been looking for the suspect since April, when the matter was reported by relatives.
“The suspect escaped soon after he defiled the girl, but officers acting on a tip-off found him hiding in Karia village and seized him,” Mr Torori said.
According to the girl’s family, the suspect is believed to have lured the girl with Ksh.50 shillings before committing the monstrous act.
“Our girl gave birth on August 28, 2022. We want justice for her,” her family said.
Meanwhile, the suspect is being held at Kerugoya police station for questioning after which he will be taken to Kerugoya Law Courts.
