Former Chief Justice and United Green Movement leader David Maraga has issued a strong condemnation of the January 25, 2026, attack on worshippers at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County.Â
Speaking in Mombasa on February 3, 2026, Maraga described the incident as unacceptable and a “disgrace to the nation,” demanding that perpetrators and the police officers involved be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The former CJ declared his full support for nationwide demonstrations, stating that the government’s use of tear gas and force in a place of worship is a grave violation of the Constitution.
The disruption occurred during a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua has since alleged it was a state-sponsored “assassination attempt” that left his vehicles disabled and worshippers traumatized.
Maraga accused the government of orchestrating the attack using “government-sponsored thugs,” describing the administration as a “den of criminals” for teargassing children and the elderly.
In response to the outcry, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered a swift investigation, with the Internal Affairs Unit and IPOA currently collecting evidence at the scene.
Maraga also hinted at joining a united opposition front to challenge President William Ruto’s administration in the 2027 General Election.
