Former Chief Justice David Maraga has promised transparency and accountability as his 2027 presidential campaign fundraising drive gathers momentum.
Speaking on Wednesday, Maraga assured supporters that every shilling contributed to his campaign would be handled with utmost integrity. “My commitment to you, as best as humanly possible, guided by integrity and constitutional fidelity, is that of complete transparency, accountability, and in the responsible handling of your resources, data, time and effort,” he said.
The retired CJ recently launched a crowdfunding campaign through his official website, inviting well-wishers to donate and register as volunteers. He emphasized that unlike traditional campaign models heavily backed by political financiers, his would be people-driven, with only a modest portion of his personal savings injected into the campaign kitty.
“The goodwill and support we’ve seen through donations and volunteer sign-ups is a true statement to the evolution of Kenyan politics,” Maraga stated. “Kenyans are taking ownership. This is your journey.”
Maraga has leaned heavily on digital tools to mobilize support and promote transparency. His campaign website features real-time tracking of donations, and he noted that his technical team is enhancing the platform’s capacity and security to ensure transparency is maintained.
“We are working to strengthen our digital platform and roll out a public ticker on all fundraising pages,” he said, acknowledging that brief maintenance downtimes may be necessary as improvements are implemented.
He further revealed that a feedback collection system is being developed to allow Kenyans to help shape his policy agenda. “This vision will evolve to meet the growing needs of a diverse and dynamic society. These digital platforms will be bold, inclusive infrastructure inspired by the energy of this young and courageous generation,” he said.
Maraga, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration, has consistently condemned what he terms its disregard for the Constitution and human rights. His entry into the presidential race has been widely seen as a call for reform and a return to governance grounded in the rule of law.
“I am deeply honoured to share this part of the Kenyan journey with all of you,” Maraga concluded.
