Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a stern warning that the continued abductions and extrajudicial killings in Kenya threaten the legitimacy of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Maraga decried the human rights violations, terming them a betrayal of the nation’s future and the sanctity of the Constitution.
“A leadership that abets a culture of killings and human rights violations jeopardises its legitimacy,” he stated.
Maraga emphasized that every Kenyan, especially the youth, deserves to live in safety and security while pursuing their dreams. He urged the public to remain vigilant against such violations and not be lulled into complacency.
“I stand in unity with all Kenyans of good conscience and call for the immediate release of all young people who are still being held incommunicado,” he added.
Reflecting on his previous call for the protection of every Kenyan life, Maraga lamented the recent discovery of two missing persons, Martin Mwau and Justus Musyimi, who were allegedly abducted in Mlolongo in December 2024. Their deaths have sparked national outrage, with two others from the same incident still missing as of January 31, 2025.
“We condole with the families of Martin Mwau and Justus Musyimi and stand with the families of those still missing. May God greatly comfort you and give you courage to push towards justice,” he said.
Maraga called for accountability and justice for the victims and their loved ones, condemning the continued violence targeting young Kenyans. He urged the nation to work together to uphold the rule of law, constitutionalism, and integrity.
“These continued crimes are a stain on our collective conscience as a nation, and we are all duty bound to say enough is enough. We cannot remain silent,” he concluded.
