Mariga Defends Wanyama Recall Amid Fan Criticism

Former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga has come to the defense of coach Benni McCarthy following his decision to recall Victor Wanyama to the national team ahead of the June international friendlies.

Wanyama, who announced his retirement from international football in 2021, was named in Kenya’s provisional squad for the upcoming friendlies against Chad, scheduled for June 7 and 10 in Morocco.

However, the CF Montréal midfielder later withdrew from the squad citing personal commitments in the United Kingdom.

His position was taken by Gor Mahia star Austin Odhiambo, whose impressive FKF Premier League form has drawn widespread praise.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Mariga backed the initial decision to recall Wanyama, saying experience is key to building a balanced and competitive squad.

“I think the coach wanted some experience and leadership added to the squad. We have a good team, but limited experience,” said Mariga. “As a player, you want to learn under someone experienced.”

Mariga emphasized that players should not be pressured into retirement based on age, referencing football legends who played well into their 40s.

“Fans cannot tell someone to retire if they feel they can give more. If you can still contribute to your club and country, it is okay,” he said.

Kenya’s friendly matches will serve as preparation for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) set for August. The provisional squad is expected to report to residential camp on Friday, June 2.
