The Marsabit county administration distributed humanitarian food in Maikona ward on Saturday to residents who are severely impacted by the present drought.
The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in the country continues to climb as a result of failed rains for five consecutive seasons, which has left thousands of families without a source of income.
The distribution scheme will be based on need, with priority given to those that are most vulnerable.
More than 1,000 households in Maikona ward received their allocation, with each recipient receiving 25 kg of rice and two litres of cooking oil.
While presiding over food distribution in Maikona town, the CEC member for Transport, Roads, Housing, and Public works Mr. Guyo Guracha said many livestock have died and those still alive are weak making it difficult for the owners to get market for sales.
He said the county government has done several interventions including water trucking but adverse effects of drought continues to affect people and their animals.
He said though the situation is worsening day by day, Governor Mohamud’s are prepared and will ensure all those severely affected get food and water until the situation goes back to normal.
He acknowledged that more people need food assistance and other forms of livelihood support assuring the locals that the county will be able to cope with the growing number of hungry residents.
He cautioned residents against selling relief food and urged beneficiaries to share with their neighbors.
