Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a university student who is alleged to have been involved in a rape and robbery incident.
DCI in a statement on May 17, 2024, said that the detectives arrested the 23-year-old student from Maseno University over rape of two fellow students at the same institution.
According to the detectives, the suspect was ambushed at his house within Chulaimbo area in Maseno.
“A 23-year-old male student at Maseno University is in custody following his suspected involvement in a violent robbery and rape of two fellow students from the same campus which occurred on the night of April 14, 2024,” read part of the statement.
According to the sleuths, the suspect was ambushed at his house where one of the victims’ phones which was stolen on the fateful night found in his possession.
DCI revealed that the April incident reported to the police by a member of community policing within Nyawita area involved two student victims.
The victims, both 1st year students aged 19 and 20, were attacked while sleeping in their shared room late in the night by two assailants who were armed with a machete and a dagger.
DCI said that the armed men kicked the door open and threatened the fear-stricken girls with stabs should they make a murmur.
“The agents from hell forced themselves on the victims before disappearing with their smartphones,” said DCI.
Further, the victims raised alarm after making sure that the attackers were out of vicinity, by screaming for help where neighbors responded by assisting them to a local hospital for medical attention.
According to DCI, Kisumu West detectives who relentlessly pursued the case eventually caught up with the first suspect on May 15, 2024, who was paraded for identification.
In addition, DNA sampling of the suspect was conducted by the detectives before he was later arraigned.
The sleuths have revealed that new leads to his accomplice(s) have since been obtained and the investigators are speeding up the probe to apprehend the suspects.
