The much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby between arch-rivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia has been postponed to a later date, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced.
Initially scheduled to take place at the Nyayo National Stadium, the fixture was called off due to ongoing renovations at the venue.
The stadium, which was expected to host thousands of fans for the high-stakes clash, has been deemed unfit to accommodate the FKF Premier League’s most iconic encounter.
In a statement, FKF assured fans that a new date and venue will be communicated soon.
Ticket holders have been advised that their tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled fixture.
Gor Mahia, currently sitting second on the league table behind leaders Kenya Police FC. AFC Leopards, meanwhile, are aiming to salvage a difficult season with a morale-boosting win over their bitter rivals.
The decision to postpone the derby comes just days after Gor Mahia’s previous match against Shabana FC, popularly known as Tore Bobe, descended into chaos. Violent fan clashes led to over 70 injuries and extensive damage to stadium infrastructure.
The FKF is currently investigating the incident and is expected to take disciplinary action against those responsible.
The federation has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of fans, players, and match officials in all league fixtures.
The Mashemeji Derby remains the crown jewel of Kenyan football, and fans across the country will now have to wait a little longer for the latest chapter of this historic rivalry.
