Mason Greenwood Exits United For Marseille

Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United for French side Marseille in a permanent transfer, bringing an end to his turbulent tenure at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old forward has signed a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 outfit, with Marseille agreeing to pay £26.6m (€31.6m) for his services. United have also inserted a significant sell-on clause, believed to be between 40 and 50 per cent.

Greenwood’s departure marks the culmination of a six-month process overseen by an executive panel, which was triggered after his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. Those charges were subsequently dropped in February 2023.

Despite his return to training with United in August, the club ultimately decided it was best for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere.

“Mason will always be remembered as a talented young player who came through our academy,” United said in a brief statement. “We wish him all the best in his future career.”

Greenwood’s departure follows a dramatic fall from grace at Old Trafford, where he rose through the ranks to make his debut at just 17. However, his progress was halted by allegations of misconduct, which led to his loan move to Spanish side Getafe in LaLiga last season.

Lazio had also made an offer for Greenwood, but Marseille’s £26.6m bid was deemed acceptable by both parties.

The French club’s president, Pablo Longoria, hailed Greenwood’s signing as a “massive coup” for the club. “Mason is an incredible talent and we’re thrilled to have him on board,” he said.

Greenwood’s agent, Jonathan Barnes, added: “We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with Marseille and look forward to seeing Mason flourish in Ligue 1.”

The departure of Greenwood marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits from United since the takeover by INEOS in December 2023.
