The Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been bailed following his arrest on suspicion of raping, assaulting and threatening to kill a woman.
The 20-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of assault on Sunday following allegations on social media. He was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill on Tuesday.
The allegations were posted on Instagram on Sunday morning and included videos, photographs and a voice note which claimed to be a conversation between Greenwood and the woman. They have since been deleted.
Manchester United previously said the forward would not return to training or matches until further notice.
A United spokesperson said: “Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind. As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for the club until further notice.”
Greater Manchester Police said Greenwood was arrested after the force became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
It said magistrates had granted a second extension to keep him in custody until Wednesday but he had now been bailed pending further investigations.
A statement said: “A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation”.
