Matatu Fares To Increase From 20th June

As a result of last week’s fuel hike, public transport vehicle (PSV) operators have raised fare prices by 20%.

According to the Federation of Public Transport Sector, the nationwide fare increase, which begins today, will affect all PSV operating across the country in order to account for recent fuel price increases.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) raised pump prices by Sh9 per litre last week, raising the cost of super and diesel in Nairobi to Sh159.12 and Sh140, respectively, the highest in Kenya’s history.

Kerosene prices increased by a similar margin, and will now retail in Nairobi for Sh127.

“The federation hereby resolves that with effect from Monday, June 20, 2022 fares payable on public transport vehicles countrywide shall be adjusted upwards by 20 percent,” said lobby’s chairman Edwins Mukabanah.

The latest increase will see petrol prices rise by Sh24 per litre in three months, the highest increase in diesel and super prices in three months since Kenya began setting pump prices.

The record prices will increase the cost of living as manufacturers, transporters, and service providers pass on the increased cost of fuel to consumers.
