The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has announced a nationwide strike in Kenya, planned to begin on February 2, 2026.The strike notice was issued due to a rising number of attacks on matatus (public service vehicles), including incidents of vehicles being torched by boda boda (motorcycle taxi) riders.

The association’s chairperson, Albert Karakacha, stated that authorities have failed to act on numerous reports, leaving owners feeling unprotected by the government.
Escalating “lawlessness” by boda boda riders, who the association claims act as “judge, jury and executioner” following accidents where matatus are often burned regardless of fault. There have been numerous specific incidents of boda boda operators burning matatus and other vehicles, which are the primary reason for the planned strike.Â
According to the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and other transport groups: At least nine vehicles have been burned in the six months leading up to the strike announcement. Two vehicles (one matatu and one private car) were reportedly torched just the weekend before the January 28, 2026 press conference.
The MOA demands government intervention, action against the perpetrators, and compensation for destroyed vehicles. They have indicated they will not call off the strike unless the President addresses their concerns.
