Controversial Referee Mateu Lahoz Sent Home After Lionel Messi Outburst

Controversial referee Mateu Lahoz has been sent home from Qatar on Monday and will not be taking part in any capacity for the remaining four matches of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Lahoz was under the spotlight after he officiated Argentina’s penalty win over the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the tournament, where he was heavily criticized by the players and fans.

The Spanish referee dished out 15 yellow cards for both teams, including one for Lionel Messi during the match. The encounter was a highly intense one as it saw many flashing points and even had a fight between both sets of players.

According to the reports in English media, Lahouz has been sent back home from Qatar and will not be taking part in rest of the four matches in the tournament in any capacity. It is unsure if the decision has been taken in the aftermath of the Argentina vs Netherlands quarterfinal at the moment.

Messi wasn’t happy with Lahoz after the match and made his feelings clear while talking to the reporters. The 35-year-old said that FIFA must think about making such decisions as he felt the Spaniard wasn’t up to the task.

“I don’t want to talk about the referee because you can’t be honest. If you talk they sanction you, FIFA must think about it, they can’t put a referee like that for these instances, they can’t put a referee who isn’t up to the task.”
