Matiang’i Orders Security Operation In Baringo

The government has announced an Immediate operation to evict invaders in Muchongoi area of Baringo South in Baringo County.

The invaders have led to deaths of dozens of people and displaced many.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi said deployment of security agents for the operation will be ruthless and will employ maximum available power including aerial operations

He said there will be recruitment of National Police Reservists in affected area to beef up security.

“This is the only way we can address the menace that has become worse daily and we urge for cooperation,” he said.

He spoke Friday when he met leaders from Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot Counties at the Sarova Westwood Hotel, Nakuru

The CS who was accompanied by top security officials said an Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) will be deployed to Chesogon in West Pokot County.

There will also be deployment of five police platoons to beef up security between the borders of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties

He also ordered for immediate arrest leaders mobilizing and funding bandits in affected areas.

“Arrest of these people will be extended to cultural leaders administering oaths to ‘bless’ bandit and other invasion missions.”

There were claims some elders have been blessing those headed for rustling missions.

Matiangi also ordered the arrest and prosecution of leaders and government officials misusing CDF and other GK vehicles to source and distribute guns and ammunition and to coordinate attacks.

He said the government will urgently work on protecting schools to enable affected institutions to reopen.

Some learning institutions there remain closed over insecurity.

The CS said they will consult and appeal to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on possibility of providing special arrangements to help those unable to register in areas affected by banditry and raging insecurity as voters in ongoing exercise have a registration window.

He added the government will support funeral arrangements for those killed in Kerio Valley in recent banditry attack.

Dozens have been killed in attacks in the area.
