Matiang’i to help BBI team get One Million Signatures for referrendum

Interior Ministry CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has announced that the BBI taskforce will from today begin seeking 1 million signatures to initiate a referendum process. – By Gerald Gekara

Matiang’i made the announcement after meeting up with governors from the western region to push for consensus among the leaders.

“After successful deliberations, Governors from Nyanza & Western region have agreed to support the BBI report without any reservations. The exercise to collect 1 million signatures is set to commence next week to initiate the referendum process.” CS Matiang’i

The contencious decision to leave out those with recommendations was informed by the report timelines which coincidentally fall in line within the 2022 election date.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the exercise will be completed in April next year.

As the air is finally clearing on the referrendum debate, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) are set to verify the signatures once the process is complete.

All eyes will be on the opposing parties who have cried foul over the decision to lock out recommendations before the document is subjected to a vote.

Catholic church leaders who retreated at their Subukia shrine, called on government to reconsider its priorities and conduct the politics in a respectable manner.
