The robbers took an undisclosed sum of money from the Equity Bank branch in Matuu.
The suspect who was discharged from the Mombasa police force is thought to have led the five-man gang that stole an undisclosed sum of money, and a police firearm.
Sylvester Kilonzo, a boda boda rider who allegedly took two gang members from Matuu to Kimangu market, was detained. Kilonzo, who is currently in police custody, is expected to assist detectives led by Machakos county police commander Issa Mohammed in locating gang members.
On Tuesday, July 27, Equity Bank issued a statement on Twitter confirming the occurrence.
Robbers pretended to be customers.
The shooters raided the financial institution on the morning of Tuesday, July 27, while posing as clients, according to a police complaint.
