The media sector in Kenya has strongly condemned recent attacks on journalists during the Gen Z-led protests that have erupted nationwide.
David Omwoyo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), disclosed that 24 documented cases of police brutality against journalists have emerged, highlighting the urgent need for accountability.
Addressing a Media Stakeholders roundtable in Naivasha, Omwoyo noted,
“We have 24 cases, but we haven’t seen any prosecution yet. Investigations are either ongoing or evidence gathering.”
He expressed concern over the deteriorating relationship between the media and the government, urging the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Inspector General of Police to expedite investigations into these incidents to ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
Paul Ilado, Head of Content at Radio Africa Group, echoed these sentiments, calling out clear violations of press freedom during the protests.

“Where is the middle ground? Journalists have responsibilities, but the police do too. It is essential for journalists to report these cases to the police and follow up to facilitate prosecution,” he asserted.
Ilado also addressed the financial struggles facing media houses, which have led to closures, delayed salaries, and layoffs.
He emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to these challenges, urging the government to support local media in navigating competition posed by tech giants that significantly impact advertising revenues.
Demas Kiprono, Chairperson of the Media Complaints Commission, reinforced the need for the protection of journalists, citing Article 34 of Kenya’s Constitution, which enshrines media freedom.
The forum also included notable figures such as Linus Kaikai, Group Editorial Director at Royal Media Services, and Managing Editor, Radio, Young Muthomi.
As pressure mounts on authorities to ensure the safety and rights of journalists, the media sector stands united in calling for justice and better support for press freedom in Kenya.
