Meru MPs Voted for Gachagua’s Impeachment Over Hopes for Kindiki’s Appointment, Says Imenti Central MP

Imenti Central MP Moses Kirima has revealed the reasons behind Meru legislators’ support for the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Parliament last week.

According to Kirima, many MPs from the region believed that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki would replace Gachagua if the impeachment was successful.

Kirima, elected under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, admitted that this assumption played a key role in his decision to vote in favor of the motion.

“We hoped Kindiki would be appointed as DP, but things are not as they seemed,” he said, pointing to the shifting political dynamics that have left Meru MPs uncertain about their decision.

He further expressed concern over ongoing lobbying from various communities seeking to have their own candidates appointed as Gachagua’s successor, should the Senate uphold the impeachment.

Among the names being floated for the position are National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

Kirima also denied allegations that President William Ruto influenced Parliament’s vote, stating that MPs acted on their own accord. “We have our own brains and consciousness,” he asserted.
