Meru University Students Demonstrate After VC Was Sent On Terminal Leave

Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) students staged a protest on Monday morning after the university council sent their Vice Chancellor (VC) Romanus Odhiambo on indefinite leave.

According to reports, the protests began early in the morning with students setting bonfires along the Meru-Maua road.

According to the students, Prof. Odhiambo improved the university’s academic standards and infrastructure. They blocked the road and demanded that he be reinstated.

During the demonstrations, a car was set on fire.

Odhiambo’s contract was set to expire in July of this year, but the council decided not to renew it due to underperformance and mismanagement.

The council also accused him of failing to implement recommendations from an audit report that revealed financial irregularities and misappropriation of funds at the university.

The council further named Charity Gichuki as acting VC until a permanent replacement is found.
