Migori County Accounts Office Destroyed in Mysterious Fire

Police in Migori County have launched an investigation into a mysterious fire that destroyed the county government’s accounts offices on Wednesday night.

The blaze occurred shortly after officials from the Auditor General’s office visited the county to investigate an alleged embezzlement of Ksh 78 billion during the 2020/2021 financial year.

An accounting officer from the county government has denied any links between the fire and a possible cover-up, asserting that all critical financial records remain intact.

“The books we use in accounting are all safe, and it is false to claim they were burnt to hide evidence,” the official stated.

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko has called for thorough investigations and pledged that any perpetrators behind the fire will be held accountable.

This incident adds to a string of recent fire-related tragedies across the country, including a fatal fire in Nairobi’s Lunga Lunga slums on September 16, where three people lost their lives.

Police are treating the Migori fire as suspicious, especially given its timing following the Auditor General’s visit, and they have vowed to pursue those responsible for the blaze. Investigations are ongoing.
