Stephen Odhiambo, widely known as the ‘Migori James Bond’, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison or a fine of Ksh500,000 after dangerously hanging onto a helicopter during a wedding in Rapogi village.
Odhiambo’s dramatic stunt took place on April 13, moments after the wedding of popular Ohangla musician Prince Indah. The helicopter, which was ferrying YouTuber Oga Obinna and other guests, had just lifted off when Odhiambo grabbed onto the landing skids in a bid to hitch a ride.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Mathias Okuche at the Milimani Law Courts, Odhiambo pleaded guilty to a disorderly act that endangered the safety of passengers on board. The court heard that his actions posed a serious threat to the pilot and five passengers, despite prior security instructions to keep at least 10 meters away from the aircraft.
His sentencing came after a week-long detention to allow for further investigations. Two police officers testified during the hearing, while Odhiambo expressed remorse and pleaded for leniency.
The viral video of the incident sparked national outrage, prompting police to track Odhiambo down. According to Uriri OCPD Enrico Lyomu, he was arrested at midnight on April 15 after sneaking back into his home. He initially resisted arrest but was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
The pilot recounted the terrifying experience, stating that the unexpected weight and distraction could have led to a fatal crash. The stunt has since been widely condemned as reckless and life-threatening.
