Migori County is set to combat climate change as the World Bank and the National Treasurer commit Sh 300 Million in assistance.
Addressing the press in Migori town, Simon Ochieng, the national treasurer officer for Financing Locally Led Programme dubbed FOCAL said that the main purpose was to make sure that the progress and the strategy taken by Migori County environment department to combat climate change is achieved.
He said that the environment department has laid down strategies that will enable the partners involved to fund the process as it involves all those in the wards and at the grassroots level to enable the local persons affected by floods and drought to be taken care of well.
Migori County executive for environment Rahab Robi said that she intends to make sure that the strategies yield fruits that will enable the local person benefits from the funds and also make sure that they are involved in the process.
She said that the department targets to unlock around Shs 300 million from various partners who will fund the process and also lay down many more strategies on how to help the county combat climate change.
She added that climate change has also affected the heritage sites of Thimlich Ohinga and made sure that they can make amends at the site whose walls are alleged to be crumbling down due to effects of the climate change.
Chief Officer for Environment Charles Chacha said that they intend to use the funds at the ward levels to help combat floods and drought in Nyatike and also dry seasons in Nyatike and Kuria East regions.
