DPP Haji Vows To Block Sonko Ambitions

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s attempt to run for an elective seat in the August elections faces a stumbling block after the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji vowed to prevent him from running.

The Nairobi County Assembly impeached Sonko in December 2020 on four counts of Gross Violation of the Constitution, Abuse of Office, Misconduct, and Crimes against National Law.

The controversial former Governor wants to return to politics and become the next Governor of Mombasa County. His campaign has since received support from the Wiper Party.

Haji, on the other hand, has stated that his office will not allow him to run in the elections.

“In my opinion, you are not only impeached not to run in Nairobi, but it is across the country because this is the republic of Kenya. So, you cannot jump from one county with an impeachment on your neck campaigning that you want to be a governor of another county. My office fight it. We might lose but we will fight it,” he said during an interview on Spice FM.

Sonko was officially given the Wiper party ticket to run for Governor of Mombasa on April 21, 2022.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka presented him with the certificate and also revealed that Sonko will be deputized by Kisauni Member of Parliament Ali Mbogo.
